1. Same Method, Shorter Innings
The engine is identical to the 50-over game: DLS still measures each side's innings as a percentage of resources built from overs remaining and wickets in hand, and still sets the target with the same formula. If that idea is new to you, start with the DLS method explained. What changes in T20 is the scale — everything is compressed into 20 overs, and that compression is what gives T20 rain rules their sting.
2. The Five-Over Minimum
For a DLS result in a standard T20, the team batting second must face at least five overs. Below that, there are simply not enough overs for a fair comparison, and the match is a no-result. This is the T20 equivalent of the 20-over minimum in a 50-over game. It is the first thing to check when rain is around: until the chasing side has had its five overs, no result can be declared no matter the score. Some knockout and tournament conditions set different minimums, so the playing conditions for that specific competition always have the final word.
3. How Resources Scale to 20 Overs
DLS's resource table is built on a 50-over innings, where a full innings is 100%. To use it in T20, the figures are scaled so that a full 20-over innings counts as 100% instead. Every partial position is expressed as a share of those 20 overs. The upshot: because 20 overs is a quarter of the original scale, each single over carries far more resource weight in T20 than it does in an ODI. Lose four overs in a 50-over innings and you have lost a modest slice; lose four in a T20 and you have lost a fifth of the whole innings.
4. A T20 Worked Example
Team 1 posts 180 in a full 20 overs (100% of resources). Rain then restricts Team 2 to 12 overs. On the T20-scaled table, 12 overs from the start with all wickets is worth about 66% of a full T20 innings.
Notice how much gentler that is than a run-rate chop would suggest — 180 over 12 of 20 overs by run rate alone would be 108, but DLS gives 119 because a team batting just 12 overs swings from ball one. Our DLS calculator has a T20 toggle that produces exactly this figure.
5. Why Targets Swing Hard
T20 DLS targets often look harsh to fans, and there is a real reason. Two things stack up in the short format:
- Every over is precious. With only 20 to begin with, each lost over strips away a large resource share, so targets move fast when overs are cut.
- Teams bat flat out from ball one. There is no accumulation phase, so the resource curve is steep — a side with wickets in hand is expected to keep scoring at a high rate throughout.
Put together, a seemingly small reduction can leave a target that feels steep against the runs on the board. It is not a flaw; it reflects how T20 innings are actually built. Knowing this is why sharp T20 sides keep an eye on their par score from the moment rain is forecast.
