What's On a Cricket Score Sheet

A complete cricket score sheet has three sections. The batting card records each batter's runs ball by ball, how they were dismissed and which bowler took the wicket. The bowling analysis tracks each bowler's overs, maidens, runs conceded and wickets, with one box per over subdivided into six deliveries. The extras row captures byes, leg byes, wides, no balls and penalty runs separately, because these count to the team total but not to any batter. A fall-of-wickets line records the score at each dismissal.

  • Batting card — batter, how out, bowler, per-ball tally, R / B / 4s / 6s
  • Bowling analysis — one box per over, six divisions per box, O / M / R / W / wd / nb
  • Extras row — b, lb, w, nb, penalty runs recorded separately
  • Fall of wickets — team score at each of the ten dismissals
  • Match header — teams, date, venue, toss winner and election

A maiden over cannot contain a wide or no ball, because those concede a run. Wides and no balls do not count as one of the six deliveries — the bowler must bowl again.

Getting Started

Print It, Fill It, Check It

1

Before the Toss

Fill the header — teams, date, venue. Write the batting order down the batter column. Mark the captain with * and the keeper with †.

2

Every Delivery

Record in the same order each time: runs to the batter, runs to the total, runs against the bowler. A consistent routine is what stops errors.

3

End of Each Over

Check that batters' runs plus all extras equals the running total. Catching a mismatch after one over is easy. After fifteen, it isn't.

Paper or App?

When Paper Works, and When It Doesn't

Paper is fine for a one-off game. It stops being fine the moment someone asks for the scorecard afterwards.
