1. The Method
To find the NRR you need, take your current aggregate runs and overs — for and against — then add the projected final match and recalculate. Vary the winning margin, or the overs you take to chase, until your new NRR clears the team you need to overtake. It is the standard NRR formula run forward with one unknown.
You need two things before you start: your own current for/against totals, and the NRR of the rival you must finish above. Then it is trial and adjustment — which is exactly what a calculator speeds up.
2. Batting First: How Big a Win
Your situation before the final game:
- Scored so far: 600 in 70.0 overs
- Conceded so far: 590 in 70.0 overs
- Current NRR: 8.571 − 8.429 = +0.143
A rival sits on +0.35, and you must finish above them. You bat first in a 20-over game and post 175. The question is how few runs you must restrict them to.

So winning is not enough — you need to win by at least 25 runs (holding them to 150 or fewer) to edge your aggregate NRR above the rival. A 15-run win actually leaves you short.
3. Chasing: How Fast
Now the same starting position, but you bowl first and they post 160. You must chase 161 — the question is in how many overs.
Chasing changes the lever. Instead of a winning margin, the variable is your overs faced — reach the target sooner and your run rate for the match jumps, because you scored the runs off fewer balls.

Chasing 161 in the full 20 overs barely moves you — you conceded a big total, which drags your aggregate down, and a slow chase does not compensate. You would need to knock it off inside about 16 overs to clear the rival. That is a demanding ask, and it shows how much a high total conceded hurts even in a win.
4. The Mistake Teams Make
The commonest error is assuming any win lifts NRR enough. As both tables show, it often does not — a narrow win against a team that scored heavily can leave your aggregate NRR almost unchanged, or even down.
The second error is doing the sum on this match alone. Your qualification NRR is the aggregate across every game, so a single match's result is diluted by everything before it. That is why a team with many overs already played needs a bigger performance to move the needle — there is more history to average against.
