1. The Short Answer

DLS decides a single match; net run rate decides a league table. When rain interrupts a game, DLS produces a fair revised target so that one match can have a result. Net run rate does something entirely different: across a whole tournament, it measures how quickly each team scores its runs and how quickly it concedes them, and uses that to separate teams level on points in the standings. One is a within-match tool; the other is a season-long tiebreaker.

3. What DLS Does

DLS answers: "Rain shortened this match — what target is fair?" It works by measuring each side's resources, the combination of overs remaining and wickets in hand, and scaling the target to match. Crucially, it accounts for wickets, because a team with wickets in hand could have scored faster in its lost overs. 4. What NRR Does

Net run rate answers a season question: "Two teams finished on the same points — who ranks higher?" It takes the average runs a team scores per over across all its matches and subtracts the average it concedes per over. A positive NRR means you generally outscore opponents; a higher NRR ranks above a lower one. Unlike DLS, it ignores wickets entirely — only runs and overs matter. The one-line test. If the question is "what do we need to win this game right now?", that is DLS. If it is "where do we sit in the table?", that is net run rate.

5. Where They Connect

They are separate calculations, but they do touch. When a rain-affected match is settled by DLS, the revised scores and overs from that result are what then feed into each team's net run rate for the tournament. So DLS can shape the league table — but only indirectly, by determining the numbers that NRR later uses. The order is always: DLS first decides the match, then NRR folds that match into the standings.
