How the DLS Target Is Worked Out
DLS turns overs and wickets into a single "resources" percentage. A team starting a 50-over innings has 100% of its resources — all its overs, all ten wickets. As overs are bowled and wickets fall, that percentage drops. The revised target is Team 1's score scaled by the ratio of the two teams' resources: Target = Team 1 score × (Team 2 resources ÷ Team 1 resources). If Team 2 ends up with more resources than Team 1 had, a bonus based on an average innings total is added instead of scaling down.
Say Team 1 makes 250 in a full 50 overs — they used 100% of their resources. Rain then cuts Team 2 to 30 overs before they start, so Team 2 has only about 75% of the resources. Their target scales down to 250 × 0.751 = 187.8, so 188 to win.
Why Cricket Needs DLS
Before DLS, rain could produce absurd targets. The method exists to make an interrupted match fair to both sides.
The Old Way Failed
