1. The Formula

NRR = (Runs Scored ÷ Overs Faced) − (Runs Conceded ÷ Overs Bowled)

Two rules govern how you feed numbers into it, and they are the whole difficulty:

  • Overs convert to decimal. 18.3 means 18 overs 3 balls = 18.5 decimal, because 3 ÷ 6 = 0.5.
  • Bowled out means full quota. A dismissed team counts as facing all its overs, however few it actually used.

Everything below is those two rules meeting real match situations.

2. Scenario: Both Teams Bat Full Overs

The simplest case. You make 190 in 20, concede 178 in 20.

  • 190 ÷ 20 = 9.50
  • 178 ÷ 20 = 8.90
  • NRR = 9.50 − 8.90 = +0.60

3. Scenario: A Team Is Bowled Out

When a team is bowled out, use the full quota of overs, not the balls actually faced. Being dismissed does not let a team shorten its "overs faced" — the calculation acts as though it batted the whole innings and simply scored no more.

You make 165 in 20. You bowl them out for 140 in 17.2 overs (20-over match).

  • Your rate: 165 ÷ 20 = 8.25
  • Their rate: 140 ÷ 20 = 7.00  (not 140 ÷ 17.33 = 8.08)
  • NRR = 8.25 − 7.00 = +1.25

Using their actual 17.2 overs would have given you a much smaller NRR of +0.17 — a huge difference, and the reason the rule exists.

4. Scenario: A Chase Won Early

Winning a chase is not being bowled out. A team that reaches the target with wickets in hand stopped batting because it won, not because it ran out of wickets — so you use its actual overs, not the full quota.

You make 160 in 20. They chase it down, reaching 161 in 17.0 overs with wickets to spare.

  • Your rate: 160 ÷ 20 = 8.00
  • Their rate: 161 ÷ 17.0 = 9.47  (actual overs, because they won)
  • NRR = 8.00 − 9.47 = −1.47

Losing a chase quickly hits your NRR hard, because they scored at a high rate against you and you get no protection from their unused overs.

5. Scenario: Rain-Reduced Overs

In a match reduced by rain, the revised number of overs becomes the quota. Run rates are worked out against the revised overs, and a bowled-out team still counts as facing the full revised quota. Note that any target adjustment itself is a separate calculation — the DLS method — but NRR simply uses whatever the revised overs are.

A match cut to 15 overs a side. You make 130 in 15, concede 125 in 15.

  • 130 ÷ 15 = 8.67
  • 125 ÷ 15 = 8.33
  • NRR = 8.67 − 8.33 = +0.33

6. Scenario: Tournament Aggregate

Combine every match: total runs and total overs on each side, then one subtraction. Say across three games you scored 480 in 55.0 overs and conceded 465 in 57.2.

  • 480 ÷ 55.0 = 8.73
  • 465 ÷ 57.33 = 8.11
  • Tournament NRR = +0.62
